Shhh… Hush… Don’t Tell!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

I LOVE this quote so much!

When I was a little girl, my mommy always told me this. She didn’t word it exactly this way (and of course, it was in Spanish) but it was the same message. It was so ingrained in my head that ’til this day, I try to live by these words. To have found it worded in such a lovely way by Iyanla was the icing on the cake.

“IF IT’S NOT YOUR STORY TO TELL, YOU DON’T TELL IT”

This quote to me described in one word would be “RESPECT.”

If I share good news with you and ask you not say anything just yet, don’t say anything. Don’t take that moment away from me by sharing it first. If I tell you something sensitive about my life and I ask you to keep it to yourself, then keep it to yourself. Don’t take my story and share it with the world if I ask you not to. Maybe I don’t plan to share with the world, but here you are… Y’all get the gist.

When you go ahead and share somebody else’s story without permission, you’re depriving that person of sharing their good news themselves. If they told you something confidential, by telling their story you’re betraying their trust. You’re basically showing no RESPECT towards their faith in you keeping that secret.

Learn to keep your mouth shut. Seriously, it’s NOT that hard. It doesn’t matter how trivial you think the story is, don’t tell it. Just HUSH! I’ve always made it a point to respect other people’s wishes when they ask me not to tell because I would like the same favor in return. It’s as simple as that.

So… what do y’all think? Do you agree with this or nah? Comment below and let me know your thoughts or experiences. I’m sure we’ve all been betrayed at some point by someone who told our story and shouldn’t have. It’s not a great feeling. What was your reaction? Let’s chat. Go! #engage

Gracias,

AnnaCris ❤

  1. Amen sista..I agree a 110%. I think another big scenario of breaking trust is when someone uses your words as an argument against someone else. For example, there’s a conversation about what ever situation between person A and B about person A having some type of issues with person C. But person A later goes on to C and uses person B as a defense saying oh even person B thinks this about you (oftentimes framing it worse than it was said and C was probably just trying to be impartial and a friend to you) – that is unacceptable and you just created problems between two people that had nothing going on before you opened your mouth to fight your own battle. People can be so impatient with sharing secrets, information, or what to say..they forget what affect it has on others.

    1. Ugh I hate that kind of scenario too. Involving an innocent to make your case. And I agree when somebody shares, they always enhance and change the story just a lil bit. Before you know it, it’s completely different than how it started. I don’t know why it’s so hard for the majority of people to keep their mouths shut. Great comment munchkin! 😉❤

  2. I agree! I even dislike when people post pics of an important event like a wedding on social media without prior consent. That is someone else’s story so let them determine how and when it will be told. Seems some folks don’t value trust.

I am so curious as to what prompted you to write this entry in your blog.

    1. Well posting pics of weddings and such on social media is different at least to me. Nowadays that can’t really be helped. I’ve been at weddings, christenings, etc. where I’ve uploaded pics. I think society is used to that in this day and age. This is more about sharing things that were told to someone in confidence or were specifically asked NOT to tell and that someone tells it anyway…

Nothing specific prompted me. I decided to do a quote of the week feature to change things up. I choose quotes that speak to me and add my interpretation that’s all.
